Your Closest Neighbor

SCRIPTURE from I Timothy 5:8 MSG. Anyone who neglects to care for family members in need repudiates the faith. That’s worse than refusing to believe in the first place.

THOUGHT Remember that old camp lyric, “they’ll know we are Christians by our love?” When Paul wrote Timothy, he was concerned that the early church operated in a way that brought glory to the Triune God. The church was setting an example that started in their relationships at home, not the marketplace.

There’s nothing like staying home for three weeks to help us remember how love is far more than a feeling! Home is where we learn to love even when it doesn’t feel good, when the chips are down, and we don’t feel understood. When we want to be selfish, but that picture of Jesus, with towel and basin — humbling himself to wash the feet of those who would run away, deny and betray him just hours later — just won’t go away.

Practice your love toward family in the coming weeks. Learn some new truths about loving neighbor as self, because the closest neighbor could be sitting next to you at the dinner table!
