SCRIPTURE Col 3:15 NIV Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
THOUGHT: There’s a difference between saying “may the peace of Christ rule” and “let the peace of Christ rule,” would you agree? To “let” is to allow — a difference that turns a mere wish for peace into something we have an active part in achieving. The peace is there, flowing from all parts of the Triune God: the God of peace (1 Thes. 5:23, Rom. 16:20), the fruit of the Holy Spirit which is peace (Gal. 5:22), and Jesus, who says to his frightened traveling companions, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (Jn. 14:27).”
The peace is there, but we have to let it in…and allow it to rule. That requires a high level of trust in the ruler, and a willingness on our parts to take captive anything that wants to rule our hearts instead.
