SCRIPTURE: Heb. 12:10-11 But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening — it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
THOUGHT: I have an uncomfortable relationship with discipline. It started early with erratic discipline, often delivered in anger, and was exacerbated by a lack of protection from those I needed to trust most. But Hebrews convicts me that God’s discipline is different. It is a sign of favor and it’s administered kindly — even if painful — to bring me into the full, whole life God sees ahead. Not as much punishment as course correction. As a kid, discipline was done to me, and as an adult, I’ve morphed it into something I needed to do to myself, forgetting that part of the good plans God has for me include circumstances and tests and trials that will help me if I don’t give up (v. 12) or get discouraged (v. 5).
So, I find myself on the path to trusting God-discipline, giving up a little more each day on the thought that I’m somehow going to perfect myself.

PRAYER: Help me trust, as I encounter trials of various kinds, that your goodness is working in me the eternal weight of glory (2 Cor. 4:17).
