SCRIPTURE: Joshua 4:5-7 NIV Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.
THOUGHT: God rarely delivers in a small way. Joshua 3 tells us that the Jordan River is at flood stage when God completes his 40-year shaping exercise and allows his people to cross into the land of promise — of course! What else would a big God plan? After every person has safely crossed, God sends some back to gather boulders, really, from the middle of the riverbed that will soon flood again. These stones will serve as reminders of the journey through and God’s faithfulness. Visible, visceral reminders of spiritual truths.
If we look around and see our culture at flood stage, we can expect that whatever God does to deliver us will be deeper and wider yet. As we go through the waters, God will be with us; and when we pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over us (Is. 43:2).
Have you thought about picking up a ‘stone’ yourself to serve as a reminder of this crossing?
