Rest…or Rest-lessness?

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 23:2-3 NIV He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

THOUGHT: Sometimes the good shepherd makes us lie down. Like kindergartners who refuse to nap, we charge on, restless to make something happen, forgetting that recharging is something God wired into all of creation. The earth rests under a blanket of snow. Bulbs rest, regrouping their energy for spring. God rests from his work after creating a day specifically for that purpose.

And so, I ask myself: am I content to spend some time lying down, enjoying a little time grazing from a good book or something else that nourishes? Can I set aside my restlessness in this season and find some quiet waters that bring refreshment to my soul? And finally, do I really understand that it’s God’s good name at stake if I don’t, and wind up frazzled and empty? It’s for the sake of his great name and reputation that he takes me by this way.

PRAYER: We need your help if we are to rest from our restlessness, God. Help us to love your kindness better, to love your rhythms wired into us, and to love your name and reputation enough to trust you in rest too.
