SCRIPTURE: Psalm 77:9-12 NIV “Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?” Then I thought, “to this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
THOUGHT: How often our knee-jerk response to suffering and difficulty is wondering who to blame. Is God to blame (has God forgotten me?), or am I to blame (is God mad at me)? In our hearts, we toggle back and forth between questioning an all-powerful God who isn’t acting like we expect and beating ourselves up with a well-rehearsed list of imperfections.
The songwriter of old struggles like this, then makes an about face — turning toward God’s previous miracles and mighty deliverance when he lacks answers and hope. It’s simple, really, think back to the future. Turn your back on what cannot be sorted, turn toward God and remember.

PRAYER: Help me today to remember, to recall your faithfulness as I face you, God — and back, boldly, into the future.
