Inheriting a Goat

SCRIPTURE: Exodus 34:8-9 NIV Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance.”

THOUGHT: Exodus is better than reality TV. God’s own people, fresh from cruel slavery, have a little victory party, then start complaining, accusing, and otherwise spitting in God’s face — ready to vote him off the island he owns. The years of their abuse have left them untrusting, hard-hearted, contemptuous.

Moses has just come up the mountain a second time with stone tablets, after breaking the first in a fit of anger over another party — this time in honor of an idol. And still…and still. These two up on the mountain begin a negotiation about an unruly people that ends in a stunning victory for us.

Despite the unruly behavior we still exhibit, God has taken us for his inheritance. What??? Think of it — how would you like to inherit the church today with all its differences, dysfunction, problems, and strife? Isn’t that a little like inheriting a goat? Yet this is what God says ‘yes’ to up on the mountain, seeing something we only dream of — a beautiful bride, a treasure, something worth investing in, fighting for, dying for. A family for God.

PRAYER: Help us see what you see, God. To love that inheritance you fight for, even die for. To continue the journey you set before us to be worthy of what you have named us.
