SCRIPTURE: Deuteronomy 8:2-4 NIV Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
THOUGHT: It’s been said that the truth leaks out of us. We can hide and tamp down only so long before emotions and experiences seep out and we must face them. This was God’s long campaign of turning a group of abused slaves into a kingdom of priests (Ex. 19:6). It was one of humbling and testing so that what was hidden in their hearts would show up. Then, as they began to see the truth, God caused them to hunger. What? It was a training program — they were learning to give up all the strategies they had used to cope with life as slaves and love and trust God for provision: physical and spiritual manna.
As we grow up into spiritual adulthood, God has us on a similar course. Humbling. Testing. Exposing our hearts. Causing us to hunger for more. Learning to trust him to answer the hunger. Then priesthood.

PRAYER: God, we’d like to skip the training program and all that walking around in sand — and yet, we’d also like to represent you to the world. Cause us to hunger for what only you can supply and where only you can lead.
