Back to the Future

SCRIPTURE: Exodus 12:14 NLT This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the LORD.

THOUGHT: Ancient Israel had a particular way of walking with God as the center of their worldview. As they faced God, they necessarily had to not face the future – instead, they had to back into the future as they faced God. The way they did this was by remembering. Recalling the faithfulness of God, the great saving acts and purposes and calling of God, even if their personal histories included things they would rather forget. The books of Moses, Isaiah, Ezra, Nehemiah, and the psalmists all contain detailed passages recalling who God was and is for a forgetful people. Rather than leave the past behind, they could use their own sorrows as a lens to see God’s faithfulness.

Today is a day for remembering, and every mile of the journey to get here mattered, whether it’s your own journey toward God, or the journey of an entire people toward freedom. So, take time to remember those who’ve gone before you making a way, and keep your back to the future.

PRAYER: Thank you for the sacredness of remembering, God, even when memories are difficult or painful, we can look back and see your faithfulness to every generation who seeks you.
