Got Meek?

SCRIPTURE: Matt 5:5 AMP, Blessed [inwardly peaceful, spiritually secure, worthy of respect] are the gentle [the kind-hearted, the sweet-spirited, the self-controlled], for they will inherit the earth.

THOUGHT: Meekness is generally shunned in our culture, our modus operandi typically looking more like “take no prisoners.” And yet, Jesus says the meek, or “gentle” as the Amplified version puts it, will inherit the earth. What an upside-down kingdom – but I believe it. The life of taking the world by storm doesn’t result in much except the need to fight to stay on top. Meekness is unassuming, and not smitten by the quest for more. It is not that meek and gentle people don’t see the more or even have the more, it is that they are content within whatever circumstances they find themselves (Phil. 4:11), trusting that God is at work both to will and to fulfill his good purposes (Phil. 2:13).

This inheritance of earth is something we can look forward to, but this living now in a manner that is less obsessive, grasping or demanding frees up energy to just enjoy today and whatever God has put before us. The life of trust is the life of freedom.

PRAYER: Lord, you said we would be happy if we are meek, even as you were meek. Today, will you remind us of your example as we go our way in a world exploding with anger and demands?
