Better Word

SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 12:22-24 NIV But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

THOUGHT: These three verses describe just how different life has become for those who’ve come after Jesus’ blood spoke a better word. Where Abel’s blood cried out for vengeance, Jesus’ blood made peace with the God we love but couldn’t come close to because of his holiness. Where the ancient Hebrews came to a fiery, smoking mountain from which they ran away, we come to the city of the living God where thousands of angels sing for joy, the church is gathered to worship, and God will finally and fantastically finish the work he’s started in each of our lives. God calls our spirits “righteous” now, which is amazing enough, but then they will be called “perfect.”

PRAYER: Thank you, God, for the writers of Scripture and the way they help us glimpse both the power of Jesus’ coming and the beauty of his return. It’s a better word that gives us hope and peace and joy and rest.
