SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 20:27 NIV The human spirit is the lamp of the LORD that sheds light on one’s inmost being.
THOUGHT: My spirit is like a lamp the Lord uses to shed light on what’s going on inside me. It makes sense, knowing that God lives inside us, but I don’t remember ever thinking of my spirit as his lamp, and I appreciate the picture. The KJV calls our spirit “the candle of the LORD.”
Typically, I think of light spreading outward to others, but according to this verse, God uses the lamp to penetrate deeper into my own thoughts, motives, actions, wounds, feelings and secrets. We know that God’s words can pierce the very marrow of our bodies, and perhaps this is the conduit he uses. Light from our spirits yielded to him, the flame kept burning by his Spirit.
