Stone Cold Glory

SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 13:9-10 NLT Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless.

THOUGHT: I spent a little time waist deep in Lake Superior yesterday evening. The term that floated up for me was stone cold glory. The absolute blue of sky and water, the balmy 85-degree breezes, and the crystal clear, stone cold water, lapping at the part of me brave enough to wade. It was a taste of everything almost perfect.

It occurs to me that while we can have a taste now — and it’s so sweet — the glory that awaits is going to make last night look small. Everything we know now is incomplete, tinged with partial-ness, stained with imperfection, its glory hidden in part behind longing, straining, groaning creation and creatures who know too little about the glory of God.

PRAYER: We sing “show us, show us your glory Lord,” but I wonder if we have a clue how a moment like that would wreck us forever? Maybe it would be a good wrecking and we’d never return to our love of the partial again.
