SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 13:11 NLT When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.
THOUGHT: Paul continues to press into the total transformative power of love: All the things you think matter now, won’t someday, he says. You’ll look back at your whole life as if it were child’s play. You’ll grow up and love will be the reason.
In my mind Paul is lodged iconic; a man’s man, toughened by shipwreck, prison, the whip, and long journeys in the service of those he loved who may or may not have loved him back. His pliable interior, once hardened by anger and legalism, was the secret to his exterior toughness. His total devotion to Jesus flowed out toward others from a moment of transformation, an epiphany that knocked him to his knees. One day he was speaking, thinking, and reasoning childishly, and the next he was transformed by the power of love.
Do you remember a day when Jesus knocked you to your knees?
PRAYER: Jesus, change me the way you changed Paul. He loved hard, spoke hard, wrote hard, journeyed hard – calling people away from childish behavior and into true, powerful love.
