What We’re Left Holding

SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 13:13 NLT Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

THOUGHT: What stirs your soul? What soapboxes do you frequent? Where are the places the conversation turns sour and your sense of the importance of faith, hope, and love seems to evaporate? Where does what is temporary seem to overwhelm what is eternal?

I confess, I can come up with the questions because I live with them. I can lose my grip when I must interact with culture more profoundly, and find myself shut down by people who seem so centered and unmovable – able to argue their ideas fluently and forcibly. But faith, hope, and love are more than ideas. They are pathways to life; ways of drinking water that doesn’t run dry, connecting to a vine providing renewal, sustenance, and peace that lasts forever.

Someday, everything else will disappear and we’ll be left holding how well we held onto faith, hope, and most of all, love.

PRAYER: Oh God, Paul lived in a culture such as ours and never let go of faith, hope and love. Help us own them, live them, depend on them, find our very life in them – the three things that last forever.
