Selective Hearing

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 13:15 ESV For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.

THOUGHT: My mom used to say I had selective hearing, and I’ll be honest, I’ve done the same thing to my Father God.

Growing up seemed to me to be a process of separating, learning to act independently. Sadly, I got used to the sound of my parent’s voice, and began to listen while not really listening. Like a billboard I drove past so often it blended in, I knew what it said, but no longer saw it.

However, in the Kingdom of God, growing up is a process of drawing nearer, not separating. Whatever dulls our hearts or makes us want to be half alert needs to be ignored, not the other way around. Jesus says being fully alive to his voice leads to a turning that brings healing, and I sure don’t want to miss that.

PRAYER: Jesus, help me turn from the things that numb and dull me, the things that make me sleep when I shouldn’t. Make me fully alive to your voice.
