Weeds

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 13:29-30 [The farmer] said, ‘No, if you weed the thistles, you’ll pull up the wheat, too. Let them grow together until harvest time. Then I’ll instruct the harvesters to pull up the thistles and tie them in bundles for the fire, then gather the wheat and put it in the barn.’

THOUGHT: This parable of Jesus just amazes me. God is like a farmer who plants a field of good seed, and an enemy comes and plants thistles throughout the field, then sneaks off. But God tells the willing farmhands (angels, v. 39) not to pull the weeds – the act of riddance will disturb the growth of the good seed. And so we deal with weeds, in the soil of the earth and human heart, a fact that will not change until the end of time as we know it. And somehow, this is a gift of God so that the good seed is allowed to grow. Wow.

PRAYER: We want ears that hear and eyes that see your mysteries, oh God. Thank you for Jesus, who understood and tried to explain the kingdom to us in ways that would shake and wake us.
