SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 11:3 NIV By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
THOUGHT: It’s interesting that the writer of Hebrews starts out a list of 15 individuals of extraordinary faith with his readers; we are first in the list. And why? Because, even 2000 years ago, it was an act of great faith to understand that the universe was formed at God’s command – called out of nothing into something. The fancy theological term for that is creatio ex nihilo and of all the things we believe about God, I find it as basic to my faith as anything else. Not only does it require a very big God, it also requires a very big faith…the starting point for a relationship of awe and wonder.

PRAYER: Oh God of wonders, it requires faith to trust that you are and you are good. We stumble around trying to make sense of it all, when faith is what you’re looking for. Grant us faith for the mystery.
