Walking Faithfully

SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 11:5-6 NIV By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

THOUGHT: In the eight generations between Adam and Noah, the oldest ancestor lived to be 969, and the “youngest” to die was 777. That’s what you call good genes. But one man in the family tree lives only 365 years and history records he never dies at all, but is taken away by God. Genesis 5:23-24 tells the story: “Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.”

Enoch was Noah’s great grandfather, and certainly Noah would have heard stories about him from his own father, Lamech, who was 113 when Enoch disappeared. Maybe the righteousness God sees in Noah has something to do with the influence of Enoch? The next chapter of Genesis records this of Noah: “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God (Gen. 6:9).” That sounds a lot like Enoch, doesn’t it?

Generations come, and generations go, and we never get to know fully the legacy of our influence on our children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. What we can hold onto and live into is that without faith, it’s impossible to please God.

PRAYER: I don’t know what Enoch did that made him such a friend to you, Father, but I know it involved great trust and faith. In a world that seeks to destroy faith, help us keep our eyes focused on you.
