Blessing, By Faith

SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 11:20 NIV By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.

THOUGHT: Of all forty verses in Hebrews 11, this is maybe the most curious. Jacob and Esau wrestled even in the womb as twins, scripture says. Esau, the twin born first, sold Jacob his birthright for a good meal, and Jacob later stole the blessing for the oldest son from Isaac too. He put animal skins over his smooth arms so he would feel more like his brother and lied multiple times (as did his Mother) to an almost-blind Isaac to pull this feat off. When Esau learned of the trickery, he actually cried, Scripture says, begging his father to come up with a blessing for him too (Gen. 27:38).

The truth is, children from the same family can be very different, can’t they? Isaac is commended for his faith in finding a way to bless both of his children, even though the deceit makes him “tremble violently (v. 33).” If your own children have disappointed you – or worse – remember the faith that it took for Isaac to bless the children who wrestled and fought and deceived and manipulated from the womb on.

PRAYER: Oh God, you are a Father who blesses undeserving children too. Help us, with grace, by faith, bless those you’ve entrusted to our care.
