I Shall Not Want

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 23:1 ESV The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

THOUGHT: So much about God – God’s words, actions, engagement with humans, willingness to suffer for us – has to do with giving us peace. A place of rest in a world of restlessness. And what do we stand more in need of? Yet it is a gift most easily not opened. We do not have to have peace. Peace takes away our need to be self-important or right about everything; our need to argue or be at war; for many, peace seems to take away something essential: who are we if we want nothing? Strive for nothing more? Don’t need and long for what is just beyond our grasp?

But the Shepherd fights for our shalom.

PRAYER: When you lead us to green pastures and still waters, oh God, help us trust. When you lead us through dark valleys and enemy territory, help us trust. We shall not be in want – you have purchased our shalom.
