SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 30:15 NIV In repentance and rest is your salvation.
THOUGHT: I see lots of connections between repentance and rest and wonder if you do too? I wonder if you could write back and share the connection you see most clearly? Then, it will be a little like you writing your own devotional this morning! I’ll just share my own as we consider these valuable words of God.
I think there is some stronghold in my life that drives me to redeem myself, especially vocationally. The thinking goes something like this: I know it would please God, if I can only achieve such and such. I don’t think my desire to be effective or significant is sinful, but when it becomes the driving force of my life it is flowing out of shame, and a demand that God help me with my will rather than the other way around. Repentance looks like remembering all the ways my own demands have led to sin and sorrow; like turning from that “self-made” strategy to whatever God’s will for my life is. There is so much rest in that about face.
PRAYER: God, I desire your rest and salvation more than my own wisdom and strength and dreams. I turn toward you in faith, knowing you are able to do more than I ask or imagine anyway.
