End Game

SCRIPTURE: James 1:12 NLT Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

THOUGHT: We started the week with James’ encouragement to “consider it all joy” when we encounter tests and trials, and to let perseverance grow and shape us into mature, complete people of God. Then, he encouraged us to seek wisdom from God, “who gives generously to all, without finding fault,” to help us navigate through the tests and trials that will come, and reminded us that no matter our circumstances, the ground is leveled in Christ: God listens equally to those who trust his voice.

Finally, here he reminds us that this life – these days of testing and trial come to shape and make us mature and whole – this is not all there is. There is a promise that moves us toward the future. An eternity to wear the crown he calls life. Think about that: a crown called life.

PRAYER: If anyone understands life, God, you do. You, the uncreated one, created life. Breathed into us and continue to give life with every breath. Life is so precious to you that you determined it should go on forever, into eternity. You started something you planned to never end. May we see its goodness here too, in the land of testing and trial…but help us never forget there is more life ahead.
