Maybe then…

SCRIPTURE: Ezekiel 5:13 NLT Then at last my anger will be spent, and I will be satisfied. And when my fury against them has subsided, all Israel will know that I, the Lord, have spoken to them in my jealous anger.

THOUGHT: The 5th and 6th chapters of Ezekiel announce judgement on ancient Israel in very specific ways. You can read them for yourself and it is not a pleasant read. But there are two things I’d like to point out: First, God’s jealous anger has been aroused over and over as he has watched them go after other lovers. Put yourself in God’s place for a moment – how would you react? The cost of human freedom has proven enormous and painful for God. Second, God’s cleanup campaign is harsh, yet it is pointed to one goal (and this phrase appears an incredible 53 times over the next 19 chapters): “then you [then they] will know that I am the Lord.”

God has a cry when his jealousy is aroused: Please know me! His anger and fury are provoked by us not knowing him, and not knowing him as God.

PRAYER: Lord, forgive us for not moving more deeply into knowing you, your heart, your good Word and your good words. Forgive us where we have known you and not treated you as God. Forgive our nation, heal our land. Make this a place for your glory to dwell.
