Inner Power

SCRIPTURE: Eph. 3:14-17 NIV For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

THOUGHT: The Ephesians dwell in a culture rife with idolatry and immorality. But Paul has been commissioned by Jesus to tell the Ephesians — and every other gentile — that God loves all people. He tells them this is why he hits his knees on their behalf: before there were fathers on earth, there was a Father in heaven, and we all share his name. He asks God to strengthen them with power through his Spirit – why? So they can fight and squabble for earthly power? No.

The power of God’s Spirit is a gift that makes Jesus at home in us. The power we need today, as then, is Christ, dwelling so closely with us that we hear his voice through the noise and chaos that surrounds us. A faith that sustains and is not shattered.

PRAYER: Dwell in us, Lord Jesus. Penetrate to our inmost being, Spirit of God, making more and more room for you, and less and less for voices that are not yours. This is power.
