Weeds the Curse

SCRIPTURE: Genesis 3:17-19 NLT Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it. It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains. By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made.

THOUGHT: The curse of disobedience falls, not on Adam directly, but on the earth. What was before an effortless garden would now be an endless fight. So, it would impact Adam (and his wife and family) greatly, just like pain and fear would impact Eve (and her husband and family). The ground is cursed because of sin, and mankind must live with the results…thorns and thistles, sweat, scratching out a living, great struggle, and finally a failure of the body to overcome.

Weeds the curse.

PRAYER: Oh God, we see the weeds. We feel their roots reaching out to entangle us and our children. The work seems endless as thorns and thistles multiply. Your decision to curse the earth and not the humans leaves us always longing for something beyond our grasp. Thank you that the story does not end in the weed patch.
