Now through the end of December, a chance to re-examine the gifts of Advent, the arrival of a Savior, and the epiphany of Epiphany.
John 1:4-5 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John – apostle, closest friend of Jesus, and gospel writer – has a unique vantage to say Jesus’ life holds a different kind of light than we’ve ever seen. Imagine housing within yourself life that is the light of all mankind, a light more powerful than any darkness, no matter how impenetrable. Jesus himself says, “I am the light of the world,” (John 8:12; 9:5). And Paul, who had a blinding experience with the resurrected Jesus, calls the light “unapproachable,” (1 Tim. 6:16).
As I ponder the magnitude of this light, what shocks me is that by inviting Jesus to live in us, we share in the gift. Jesus also says we are the light of the world, (Matt. 5:14).
As a recent lyric Light of the World, by Lauren Daigle proclaims so beautifully, the gift of light is for all who wait. For all who hunger. For all who pray. For all who wonder. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCRunZGYBi4)
Prayer: Giver of good gifts, thank you for the gift of your life, the light of all men, and women, and children; the light of the world; the light that shines on through the darkness, no matter how deep. And thank you that this gift shines in and through me to others who need light for the journey.
