Now through the end of December, a chance to re-examine the gifts of Advent, the arrival of a Savior, and the epiphany of Epiphany.
Luke 2:19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.
What do you count as treasure? For me, the word suggests a chest at the bottom of an ocean; a bulging trunk full of gold I hope to someday find. But whether you’re like me, or you’ve already got your gold in a garage, house, barn, or bank – treasure is typically something we long to put our hands on.
The treasure spoken of in Luke, however, is wealth of the heart. Mary picks up memories like precious stones, keeps them in a bag, and takes them out often to consider their potential, angle, color and weight again. When we ponder memories like that, it is often because we are trying with finite minds to comprehend the incomprehensible. There is little logic in the events of Mary’s life. Yet, because she trusts God, she considers it all valuable: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
We also have gifts of treasure to ponder. Things have happened that we don’t understand, but we trust that God is good. So, we take these stones out from time to time, consider them anew, and find that sometimes an edge is worn off, or a stone has cracked open so we can finally see the riches hidden there.
Prayer: Giver of good gifts, may we treasure each moment and memory of life with you, more certain with the passing of time that you are good, and will reveal your plan in time, just like you did for Mary.
