The Basics

SCRIPTURE: Micah 6:8 NLT The Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

THOUGHT: A complex mind in a complex world will tell you all kinds of things about how to find life, liberty and happiness. But following all those inner prompts often leads to self, not life. And self is a tyrannical little king, born to keep you hopping to its every whim. Happiness for the self-server is threatened when its kingdom is threatened.

What a relief from the complexity of serving the little king to turn toward the real King for simplicity. Sometimes, my complicated brain just needs the basics: Do what is right. Love mercy. Walk humbly with the one who has given me breath. In turning toward what God requires – what God says is good – I find the life that evades me when I am stuck on self.

QUOTE: “Public virtue cannot exist in a Nation without private Virtue, and public Virtue is the only Foundation of Republics.” John Adams, April 1776

PRAYER: Thank you, oh God, that what you require is good for us – leading to life, freedom and joy. Remind us of the basics again and again when we are tempted to think we have a better way than doing what is right, loving mercy and walking humbly with you.
