SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 3:6NIV But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.
THOUGHT: I have a set of wooden nesting Santas I often get out at Christmas. The ones where the top comes off to reveal another, and another, and another. Well, Jesus is building a house for us, and we’re building a house for him that will fit inside the one he’s building, and both fit into the house of God. The original nesting instinct, I guess.
So, what is it like to house Jesus? Like a rough-hewn manger, we become a place of hospitality, however humble and imperfect. We make space, even when impractical or seemingly impossible – because Jesus is Lord of the impractical and impossible. The more room we make, the more our human logic pales before God-logic.
In the grand finale, Jesus presses into the house metaphor. “I stand at the door. I knock. If you hear me call and open the door, I’ll come right in and sit down to supper with you (Rev. 3:20 MSG).”
If you’re still deciding whether to open the next door he knocks on, just imagine the house you’d like him to build for you and let that guide how much room you offer and how much hospitality you show.
PRAYER: Jesus, give me a larger view of the privilege and responsibility of housing you.
