Invitation

SCRIPTURE: Jeremiah 6:16NIV This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”

THOUGHT: Jeremiah 6 spells out the judgement that comes on Israel for going the opposite direction after God invites them to walk in the good way to find rest. And what God wants them to find isn’t just sleep, it’s rest for the soul – the mind, the will, the emotions – the whole being, at rest, in peace. Shalom. Instead, their pursuit for life outside of God has led them to war.

Jesus invites us to this same rest. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Mt. 11:29).”

If there is one thing modern culture doesn’t invite us to, it’s rest for the soul. But we’ve been invited by the King of the Universe to a different dance, with different steps. Steps along an ancient path toward a promise that’s worth pursuing. I hope you dance!

PRAYER: Oh God, we repent of the places where we’ve run the other way when you invited us to rest for our souls. Thank you for your invitation to the ancient paths – the good ways. Help us find and follow them amidst a culture running the opposite direction.
