Seeking Comfort

SCRIPTURE: John 16:7 AMP But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

THOUGHT: I love the fact that the Holy Spirit is called the “Comforter,” and I’m sure I’m not alone. But I often seek comfort as a way of escape, and that’s not what Jesus was promising.

The word “comfort” from its Latin origins, confortāre, means “to strengthen.” Even our English word reminds me of “with fortification.” Isn’t that interesting? I think I need relief, or consolation, or to get away from it all, and the help God supplies is strength. Beautiful. Shocking. I’ve been seeking and asking for strength and didn’t even know it.

PRAYER: Oh God, you have surprised me with a truth that resonates of your severe mercy. I want relief, and you provide me with everything I need to be stronger.
