SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 19:13-14 NKJV a quarrelsome wife is like the constant dripping of a leaky roof. Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.
THOUGHT: Maybe you did or didn’t bring a dowry to your wedding – Proverbs 19 says it’s not the most mission-critical element to a successful marriage. Parents might give you money, but only God can make you that old-fashioned word, prudent, which other versions translate as wise, understanding, sensible, insightful, congenial, or good. The good news for those of us who grew up in dysfunctional families is that God isn’t relying on our parents to give us what we most truly need for great relationships.
If you’ve ever seen a barn that’s about to collapse, you’ll know what I mean when I say the roof goes first. Any farmer will tell you it’s just not prudent to let the roof go. Being quarrelsome (or other versions use the words contentious, wrangling, nagging, bickering or chiding) is like chipping away at the most vital structure of the house you’re trying to build.
The kindness of women is needed in our world today too, and a good woman is like a secure roof over the head, providing shelter from the storm and wisdom about the power of erosion.
PRAYER: Oh Lord, the storms are all around us it seems. Help us as women be protectors of the roof over our loved ones, not giving way to anything that chips away at its integrity.
