The Plumb Line

SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 5:20-21NIV Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

THOUGHT: I’m certain you’ve noticed we live in a day of unprecedented redefining. Nothing is sacred – except the new way of defining something – until it’s not. Now gender is fluid or binary, or some other human creation, and the history of our nation is being rewritten for the textbooks of a new generation. National shame is the order of the day, and social distance is what we’re being asked to put between us and our Judeo-Christian foundation.

Isaiah, almost 3000 years ago, saw it and named it in his culture. And I think it’s true for us: if you go to the plumb line, you can tell what’s crooked.

PRAYER: Oh God, you hold the plumb. When we try to define life on our own terms, we confuse the sacred life you bought and paid for. Forgive us, and strengthen our resolve to name bitter, bitter and sweet, sweet.
