Little Kings & Little Degrees

SCRIPTURE: I Samuel 15:23 NIV For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.

THOUGHT: Saul was anointed king because he was tall and handsome (1 Sam. 9:2). I can think of a few presidents where those two qualities carried the day, so it’s not hard to believe. But Saul was just a little king, and his downfall proves it. He ignores God’s detailed instructions after a stunning victory, builds a monument to himself, and tries to cover his disobedience with double-speak.

We can all be like little kings. We own things, we covet things, we hoard things for ourselves. We get wise in our own eyes and measure our little degrees of deviation as of no consequence. We forget that God sees rebellion as if it’s witchcraft and arrogance like it’s idolatry. In fact, we likely forget God altogether as we preen for our followers – and we may perceive God is admiring us too. But little kings sink by little degrees.

PRAYER: Oh God, at the expense of pride and arrogance, keep me humble in my own eyes. Keep me aware of your Big Kingship always.
