Unlikely Kingdom

SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 22:2 ESV And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him.

THOUGHT: Yesterday, I wrote about the cave where David hid from Saul – but today it’s about who followed him there. This is a gathering of souls voted not most likely to succeed, and it’s not the only story in Biblical history that riffs on this theme. Yet this was the coming of the reign of the house of David, predecessor of the promised Messiah – in a cave reminiscent of the coming of another king of the same lineage! It seems to me that God picks the most unlikely places and people to do his best work, and that gives each of us hope. There is also a point to be made here that people who are at a disadvantage, disenfranchised, and made to feel deplorable have little more to lose when a kingdom begins to topple.

PRAYER: Your ways are so mysterious, oh Lord. They make me smile in spite of my own fears of being found among the disadvantaged, disenfranchised deplorables of the world!
