An Enemy Has Done This

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 13:28-30 NLT “An enemy has done this!” the farmer exclaimed. “Should we pull out the weeds?” they asked. “No,” he replied, you’ll uproot the wheat if you do. Let both grow together until the harvest.”

THOUGHT: I wish my mom had subscribed to this message when I was a kid — although I hate to think what our front yard would have looked like if she did! I can tell you, my siblings and I picked our fair share of weeds.

But imagine if some small-town malfeasant was actually stealing down our block at night, planting weed seed while we slept peacefully after all our hard work in the yard? Well, that would make the blood boil.

Jesus said in this parable that is what’s happening in the world. God planted good seed. Everything for life and sustenance was there. The sun and rain were there to produce a bumper crop…but some bad actor planted weeds in paradise!

Someday, I hope to write a book about this little story Jesus told. It says so much about who God is and how God works. It explains something otherwise mystifying about the crazy number of weeds we see growing taller and stronger by the day. But God has a plan, and it’s don’t disrupt the roots of the good seed. As the consummate gardener, God knows how to get the best harvest out of a field, sown with weed seed, in the dark, by an enemy.

PRAYER: God, you said through Jesus you have a plan for dealing with the weeds, but it wouldn’t happen until harvest. May your harvest come soon, Lord, but until that day, please give the good seed strength and nourishment to grow taller and stronger, despite this despicable deed of the enemy.
