Robust Challenge

SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 1:3-4 NLT Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

THOUGHT: I have to confess, I sometimes wonder why anyone would want to live forever. Life seems so unpredictable, so precarious, so challenging. But this musing, which typically happens during an uphill climb, illuminates my need for a more robust theology of heaven. Another confession: I have very rarely heard a sermon about heaven, and I don’t remember a single teaching about it while I was in seminary. Maybe I am not alone in needing a more robust theology of heaven.

Living in great expectation actually sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Like you’ve been handed tickets to next year’s Final Four or are climbing into the basket of a hot air balloon – better yet, a priceless inheritance is waiting for you. Take a few minutes right now to think about how that feels: Excitement runs through you. You laugh, shout woo-hoo, and can’t stop talking about your anticipation.

Peter says here that because of the resurrection of Jesus, we can live that way every minute of every day. That’s a robust challenge.

PRAYER: Lord, what is it all about if not eternity? And yet, I find that my final destination gets very little of my attention. Paint me a picture, give me a vision or dream, and draw me toward the Kingdom where everything is just the way you planned it.
