The Power of Remembering

SCRIPTURE: Joshua 1:8-9 NIV Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

THOUGHT: Has God ever told you to be strong and courageous, to not be afraid or discouraged? If so, chances are good you really, really needed to hear that. Circumstances ahead of you were about to get tougher than circumstances now.

Think about it: Joshua has watched Moses lead the people for years. He’s watched rebellion, judgement, food from heaven, the giving of the law, the rejection of the law, the consequences, the wandering around in the same piece of harsh desert ad nauseum, etc. But he has no idea of the challenges that lie ahead as God places the mantle of leadership on him, only the charge to study continually, obey, and be strong and courageous while rejecting fear and discouragement.

Joshua’s biggest challenge – and this is true for us too – isn’t circumstances, it’s remembering what God has said to us, and letting that be the final word on whatever we face.

PRAYER: Help me remember, Lord: Remember every word you’ve ever spoken to me; remember every way in which you’ve made a way where there was no way. Help me go forward in faith by looking back to find courage and strength.
