Starting From Scratch, 1

SCRIPTURE: Acts 17:22-23 MSG It is plain to see that you Athenians take your religion seriously. When I arrived here the other day, I was fascinated with all the shrines I came across. And then I found one inscribed, ‘to the god nobody knows.’ I’m here to introduce you to this God so you can worship intelligently, know who you’re dealing with.
THOUGHT: In creating the pantheon of gods, of course intellectual spiritualists would come up with the god nobody knows. It’s called diversity. Leave no god out so no god’s feelings are hurt – because when a god’s feelings are hurt, you get a situation like Zeus and Poseidon. No bueno. Give all the gods airtime is their motto.
It’s fascinating to imagine Paul walking through all the shrines in Athens, his own intellectual mind whirring with the truths he’s encountered that changed him from elitist snob to humble Christian; wondering what he could say to these spiritually hungry people that would bump them out of their diversity rut.
Paul finds an angle, addressing their desire to worship intelligently, to use their minds to find out who this unknown God is. Some listen, some don’t. Fast forward two thousand years….
PRAYER: Oh God, you have called us to worship only you, the God of Heaven and Earth, with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Help us use our mind, our intellectual capacity, to tell the story even better: What a difference you have made in our lives.
