Why?

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 8:3-5 ESV When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.

THOUGHT: Have you ever found yourself wondering why in the world God created humans? They were the big question mark in creation, after all. The creatures capable of active, thoughtful decisions rather than just instinct. The creatures that could decide not to trust, not to believe in God’s love or purposesor the other way around. The only ones capable of setting up their will against God’s will – or the other way around. So why? Why would God risk a perfect creation with the introduction of a creature that could send his perfect plans spinning out of control?

Someday we will understand, but until then, I will be asking what is humanity that you are mindful of us, and our children that you care for us? By faith, I will trust the oldest story in Scripture – that a perfect idea was the motive behind all of it – So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (Gen. 1:27). We are crowned with a glory and honor we barely understand.

PRAYER: Oh God, help us grasp the glory and honor you have crowned us with – imago dei – made in your image. May it motivate us to dig deeper and struggle harder to live into what you have already seen in us.
