THOUGHT: It’s Memorial Day, and I can’t help but feel the significance more profoundly this year than ever before in my life. All the people who have given “the last full measure of devotion,” as President Lincoln said so poignantly in his Gettysburg Address, to address grievous wrongs at home and abroad, to fight for their belief that all humans are created equal in God’s eyes – this is the fight for which they gave all.
Lincoln speaks still as he challenges the living, “to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Amen President Lincoln. Amen to all those who served courageously. Amen to all those serving today who still believe that one nation, under God with liberty and justice for all is worth the fight.

PRAYER: Lord, I lament the fact that many veterans express dismay over the sacrifices made to secure freedom for a people who have abused it. Lord, hear our prayers, forgive our sin, and heal our land.
