What if?

SCRIPTURE: “To whom then will you compare Me that I would be his equal?” says the Holy One. Raise your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the One who brings out their multitude by number, He calls them all by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, not one of them is missing. Isaiah 40:25-26 NASB

THOUGHT: As we grow up and get busy with adult stuff-of-life, we can forget what it’s like to lay down in soft, green grass on a warm summer’s evening; the way breeze feels against skin and night noises open up a universe easily concealed behind traffic noise, closed windows, and air conditioners; the way stars hang above us like tiny windows to another world.

These glimpses are important to our sense of wonder as children and we too soon put them away as trivial. What if they are the real stuff-of-life? The chance to breathe in what is more real than whatever else occupies our time, our money, our affections, our anxious hearts? What if the God who names even stars is waiting for us there, and we come away from the soft, green grass and night noises and starlight more certain of his might and the strength of his power? And what if that is what we need most?

PRAYER: We are so full of progress, aren’t we Lord? Gadgets and trinkets and supposed ways of making life simpler and safer. Noise and noise and more noise. We buy into it, stifling that tiny voice crying out for something real. And then, in a sweet, soul-saving moment, we encounter your vastness, your unfathomable ways, your invitation to a life apart from what our hands have done. Re-create us, oh God, help us choose life, that we and our children may live.
