SCRIPTURE: Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 AMP

THOUGHT: My husband, Fred, loves to read biographies. His most recent is Ron Chernow’s 731-page tome, Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton was the chief aide to George Washington during the American Revolution and a signer of the constitution.

Fred recounted for me one day a fact I just can’t forget: Hamilton went to a prep school that supplied a lot of students to Princeton. The applicants to Princeton in the early 1770s (in their teens, by the way) had to know Virgil, Cicero’s orations, and Latin grammar – and also be so well acquainted with Greek that they could translate any passage from Matthew, Mark, Luke or John into either Latin or English. Whaaaaaat?

Why be content feeding our souls at the drive through of pop culture when a full, healthy menu awaits study and memorization? Why specialize in trivia when we could, instead, press into accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth?

PRAYER: Lord of all knowledge and wisdom, you know we are capable of so much more than we ask of ourselves or you. Our children are capable of so much more than we ask of them and so much more than they ask of themselves. Expand our desire to learn the truth, to study to show ourselves approved to you our teacher.
