SCRIPTURE: When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”
“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. 2 Kings 2:9 NIV
THOUGHT: Elisha borrowed a lot of faith the day Elijah died, but sometimes we only need to borrow a little – and no one needs to die to accomplish it! We need a neighbor from whom to borrow an egg, so to speak, because we have everything we need to make dinner but an egg and no time for a grocery store. I don’t mean to trivialize faith, but if you’ve ever tried to make spaghetti pie or cake or pancakes without egg, you know how the finished product suffers: flat or won’t hang together, like us when we’re low on faith.
Finding lenders is easy when we’re willing to admit we’re in need: a telephone call to a friend, a small group, a visit with a Christian counselor or spiritual director, praying with your spouse, an online sermon, a book about someone else’s faith journey, a song.
The point is, we aren’t islands. God made us relational for a reason. Even his own son didn’t escape the neediness of being human. There is a give and take to the faith journey, and if we ignore the borrowing part, we stop the circle of giving.
PRAYER: Help us be both borrowers and lenders of faith in this needy world, oh God, even if it’s far short of receiving a double portion of our mentor’s spirit! And thank you for the chance to be part of the circle of both giving and receiving.
