Plumb-Line True

SCRIPTURE: Compose your own new song to him; give him a trumpet fanfare. For God’s Word is solid to the core; everything he makes is sound inside and out. He loves it when everything fits, when his world is in plumb-line true. Psalm 33:3-5 MSG

THOUGHT: The human race wants to argue with God. It seems this has almost always been the rule, with little generational exceptions here and there. I get a little shiver when I read Jesus’ words, recorded by both Matthew and Luke: “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.” According to Genesis 6 (so quickly?!) the decision made in the days of Noah flowed out of God’s broken heart: “God saw that human evil was out of control. People thought evil, imagined evil—evil, evil, evil from morning to night. God was sorry that he had made the human race in the first place; it broke his heart.”

If we’re just willing to rewind our own short-sighted desires and check ego at the door, we can see that God’s Word is solid to the core, everything he makes is sound inside and out. From the creation narrative, to Ezekiel’s prophesy over the valley of dry bones, to the resurrection of Jesus – and right into our own stories! – we meet a committed and powerful Deity who loves to bring order out of disorder, a God who loves it when everything fits, when his world is in plumb-line true.

Being made plumb-line true is the gift of a good God, worthy of every song we could ever sing and a thousand trumpet fanfares. If your heart wants to argue for your own system of measurement, please write me a note; I’ll be glad to share with you the tragedy of building with an untrue plumb-line.

SONG: Build My Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZW4_8_zCBE

PRAYER: God, make a fresh start in me, shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life. Don’t throw me out with the trash, or fail to breathe holiness in me. Bring me back from gray exile, put a fresh wind in my sails! Give me a job teaching rebels your ways so the lost can find their way home. Commute my death sentence, God, my salvation God, and I’ll sing anthems to your life-giving ways. Unbutton my lips, dear God; I’ll let loose with your praise (Psalm 51:10-15 MSG).
