SCRIPTURE: From high in the skies God looks around, he sees all Adam’s brood. From where he sits he overlooks all us earth-dwellers. He has shaped each person in turn; now he watches everything we do. Psalm 33:13-15 MSG
THOUGHT: Songwriter Julie Gold penned these words in 1985: From a distance we are instruments marching in a common band. Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace. They’re the songs of every man. God is watching us. God is watching us. God is watching us from a distance.
Gold’s lyric, recorded by Bette Midler in 1990, became a huge hit, striking a nerve in many who felt a longing for peace at home and abroad. I felt it then and feel it now as I re-listen – it’s a haunting song, but it supposes that all God is doing is watching. There is truth to God watching, but it is not the whole truth. His watching gives him titles such as “the God who sees,” and “omniscient.” His watching and knowing result in grace, mercy, and perfect judgment. Part of his watching led to the decision to incarnate into our fragile flesh and walk among us, ultimately paying for the anger, vengeance, murder, and hatred existing on earth.
So, is he watching you and I? Yes. In the NIV, the verse reads, “he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do” is watching to see what we will do with the life he has given us. But God is not just watching, he is waiting for us to turn to him for help in time of need (Heb. 4:16).
