SCRIPTURE: No king succeeds with a big army alone, no warrior wins by brute strength. Horsepower is not the answer; no one gets by on muscle alone. Psalm 33:16-17 MSG
THOUGHT: Yesterday I talked about God watching to see what we would do with the life he has given us, and not only watching – waiting to see if we would acknowledge our need for his grace, mercy, and justice; waiting to see if we would try to get by on muscle alone or ask for God’s better solutions. Here, the Psalmist underscores that point. Even kings and warriors with all their resources can’t achieve true success on muscle alone. Just power and strength don’t lead to the success God is watching for, planning, and promising. God promises not the hollow victory of brute force – one which leaves misery and death in its wake – but a righteous rule that leads to joy and stability, human flourishing, freedom.

PRAYER: Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit you say, oh God. And so we plead for the only way that truly brings about your will and the human flourishing we long for. And we pray against those who use might and power to achieve only human will. Your will be done, on earth as in heaven!
