SCRIPTURE: We’re depending on God; he’s everything we need. What’s more, our hearts brim with joy since we’ve taken for our own his holy name. Psalm 33:20-21 MSG
THOUGHT: Dependency has gotten a bad rap in recent years. Even its synonyms swing all the way from “reliant” to “addiction.” The word can smack of co-dependency or bad habits of some kind. Since most of us have been brought up to embody self-reliant, we have to sort through and reclaim dependency because there is a dependency that’s healthy and wise. It’s quite the opposite of addiction, because the addict cannot put down a substance often because they cannot admit their need. Our dependency on God flows out of hearts that have been to the throne of grace, seen the discrepancy between what we can do in our power and what God can do in his, and bowed a knee.
Faith is good dependency. Secure connection, not insecure addiction. Honest acknowledgement: You are God and I am not. It’s a laying down of the idea that I must be in charge of everything, or I must be in control of everything, or I must somehow hide. It’s a relinquishing of the will – sometimes with fear, yes, but sometimes wholeheartedly because we don’t just talk about God having a better plan, we’ve experienced it and never want to go our own way again. Those who walk a deeply reliant faith journey have found joy in belonging to God and carrying his name as their own, at home at the table where God is host.

PRAYER: Thank you, God, for the gift of good dependency. I used to struggle with belonging to anything or anyone, having a need, or showing a weakness, but you have shown me the joy and peace of laying down self-sufficiency for belonging at your table.
