Chatter, Chatter. Silence.

SCRIPTURE: “Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies? For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak. Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it.” The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him. Habakkuk 2:18-20 NIV

THOUGHT: Habakkuk has a few complaints. He is not unlike me in that regard. He loves God. He trusts God. He speaks the truth on behalf of God. But he just doesn’t understand a lot of things going on around him, and why God seems silent while the plans of the wicked prosper.

Basically, God tells Habakkuk that all the idols people create, then trust in, although lifeless — their jobs, their money, their power, their politics – all those idols stand silent in the day of need. Ironically, they are as silent as the people of God in God’s presence. No one – and certainly no idol – makes a sound. The jesters are silenced by shame as the things they’ve trusted in topple. The people of God are awestruck by glory and filled with the silence that holiness always invites.

PRAYER: Lord God, let me not be quick with my mouth, or hasty in my heart to utter anything before you. You are in heaven and I am on earth, so let my words be few. (based on Ecclesiastes 5:2 NIV)
